Isuzu Sohma is the horse of the Chinese Zodiac. She appears only in the manga. She is normally called Rin because it is an alternate reading of the second kanji in her name. She once dated Hatsuharu Sohma and is extremely close to Hiro Sohma and Tohru Honda. She often visits Kazuma Sohma and Shigure Sohma because she believes that they both have some knowledge about breaking the curse. She is tall and has black hip-length hair which is soon cut off by Akito Sohma. Natsuki Takaya has numerously described her as "the character in charge of sexiness". She is stubborn and independent and cannot stand depending on anyone else, even if she really needs or wants to. These traits are those associated with her zodiac year. She is also sharp-tongued but truthfully cares for others. Her parents pretended to be kind and affectionate toward her, unlike the other parents of Zodiac members. When she asked her parents if they were happy, they immediately neglected her and abused her so badly that she got hospitalized. While in the hospital, Rin's mother visited her and said that she "didn't have to come home anymore." She also said that she "thought that" she loved her, but "now I'm not sure." Haru (Hatsuharu) was visiting her with Shishou (Kazuma) at the time and got angry when Rin's mother said that. He said that when "us children" were told that, "what are we going to do? Apologize! APOLOGIZE TO RIN!!" Haru would visit Rin after that, taking her out of the hospital so they could go play. When Rin was finally allowed out of the hospital, she began staying with Kagura Sohma and her family. On one occasion, after much time had passed, Rin and Haru were hanging out with one another and Haru said, "Rin. Will you kiss me?" and when Rin asked him why and explained that Akito Sohma would be angry, he said, "Because I love you. I can't stand the idea of you being with someone else. Or do you not want me?" Rin and Haru began dating, but soon Akito found out. When Akito asked her who started it-her or Haru-she said, "O-of course it's all my doing!" Akito then tells her that she can't stand women. "That slinky black hair...makes me sick." She was most likely referring to Ren Sohma, her mother and worst enemy. (She and Rin looked similar to each other until Akito cut Rin's hair.) Akito smiled an unkind smile at Rin and said, "Well then. What are we going to do," and pushed Rin out of a window. When Rin hit the ground, she began crying, thinking that she "wanted...to release you (Haru)." She was admitted to the hospital again, and on one of the days that Haru visited her, she told him, "I don't need you anymore. I'm tired of you," even though she actually felt like she still needed him. Tohru began coming to visit her, and Rin got so close to Tohru that she became angry any time anyone hurt her or made her cry and grew extremely protective of her-as she was with Haru. Ren once told Rin that if she stole a black box from Akito that she claimed belonged to her, she would tell her how to break the curse. Rin obliged, and went into Akito's room to find it. Once she did, Akito came up behind her and punished her by locking her in the Cat's confinement chamber. Kureno let her out, and once out she reconciled with Haru. After the curse was broken, she says that she doesn't understand how everyone can just move on like Akito's abuse was just a dream. She also says that she still gets angry, saying that "you're all stupid."
